3D Product Animation That Explains How Your Product Works
3D product animation is a computer-generated film of your physical product that shows what a camera can't: the inside, the mechanism, the parts coming apart and going back together, or a product that doesn't exist yet. At Animation Explainers we build those 3D shots into a scripted explainer, with voiceover, on-screen labels and a clear next step. You end up with a video that explains the product as well as showing it off.
We work with teams selling devices, hardware and engineered products to technical buyers: medtech, IT hardware, industrial and aerospace. If your product is easier to understand once you can see inside it, this page is for you.
What is 3D product animation?
3D product animation is a video made from a digital 3D model of a product. The model is textured, lit and animated in software, then rendered frame by frame. Because nothing is filmed, you can move the camera anywhere, slice the product open, fade the casing away, or show a version that’s still on the engineering drawing.
It’s different from a 3D explainer video, which uses 3D as the visual style for a whole story (characters, worlds, abstract ideas). 3D product animation is about one thing: making a real product and how it works unmistakable. If you want 3D as a style for a broader story, see our 3D explainer videos page.
What 3D product animation can show
| Shot | What it shows | Where it’s used |
| 360° turntable | The whole product from every side, with materials and finish | Product pages, trade-show loops, e-commerce |
| Exploded view | Components separating in order, then reassembling | Engineering buyers, sales decks, launch films |
| Cross-section / X-ray | The inside of a sealed product: airflow, fluid paths, circuitry | Medical devices, industrial kit, hardware |
| Mechanism in motion | Moving parts, hinges, valves, actuators working in real time | How-it-works explainers, training |
| Step-by-step use | Hands and device together: set-up, use, cleaning, maintenance | Instructions-for-use films, onboarding, support |
| In-context scene | The product in its environment: clinic, data centre, factory, orbit | Brand and launch films |
| Callouts and data | Labels, specs and UI overlays tied to the 3D shot | B2B explainers, investor decks |
Most projects mix three or four of these. A 90-second device explainer might open on the problem, cut to a cross-section showing the mechanism, and close on a turntable with the three specs that matter.
When 3D is the right call (and when it isn’t)
| Choose… | When… |
| 3D product animation | The value is inside the product, the product isn’t manufactured yet, it’s too small, big or dangerous to film, or you need many variants from one model |
| 2D animation with product shots | The story is about people, workflows or outcomes and the product is one part of it. Usually faster and lighter on budget |
| Live-action filming | The product is finished, looks good on camera, and the story is about real people using it |
| UI and screen animation | The “product” is software. See product explainer and demo videos |
Our honest rule: if the viewer only needs to recognise the product, 2D or footage is often enough. If they need to understand how it works, 3D earns its cost. We’ll tell you on the first call which one your brief needs. Compare every option on animation styles.
Product and device work from our portfolio
Enbio: space engineering, explained. A 2 minute 29 second film for a surface-engineering company working in the space sector, made from a mix of licensed stock, client-provided footage and our own animation.
MD3: a dental device from waiting room to chairside. A medical explainer that builds to a clean product sequence of the device itself. Our team 3D animated the device shots, working from a client-supplied model or re-illustrating the device from photos.
XMA: hardware that sells itself. Part of a series we made for XMA covering Microsoft Surface Pro, HPE Aruba, GreenLake, SimpliVity and more: physical IT products explained for business buyers.
We’ve also made device how-to films for Trudell (the AeroEclipse and Aerobika devices), plus device explainers for Nightware, Ventripoint and Simpl Healthcare. See more on our portfolio.
How a 3D product animation project runs
- Discovery call: the product, the audience, the one thing they must understand, and where the film will be used.
- Script and shot list: we write the voiceover and list the 3D shots each line needs (exploded view here, cross-section there).
- Model build: we build or clean up the 3D model from your CAD files, drawings or reference photos, then send previews for an accuracy check by your engineers.
- Look development: materials, colours, lighting and camera style, approved on a few still frames before animation starts.
- Storyboard and animatic: a timed rough cut with the voiceover, so you can sign off pacing before the expensive render hours.
- Animation and render: the final motion, rendered at full quality, with labels, UI overlays and sound design added in compositing.
- Revisions and delivery: three revision rounds are included, one each at script, storyboard and animation, then the master and every cutdown and format you need.
The accuracy check in step 3 matters most for regulated and engineered products. It’s where a wrong hole count or a misplaced valve gets caught, before it costs render time. Our explainer video production services page covers the wider process and deliverables.
What we need from you
- CAD or 3D files if you have them. Send us whatever you have and we’ll advise.
- No CAD? Photos and drawings work too. Clear photos from every side, dimensions, and close-ups of logos, buttons and textures.
- Materials and finishes. Colour codes, surface finishes (matte, gloss, brushed), transparent parts.
- How it works. An engineer’s walkthrough or existing IFU/manual so the mechanism is shown correctly.
- Brand guidelines and any claims that need regulatory or legal review.
- One reviewer per stage on your side who can say yes.
What you get
- A finished master film (a product explainer usually runs 60–120 seconds)
- Cutdowns for ads and social (for example 15 and 30 seconds) and square or vertical versions on request
- Captions file and voiceover in the languages you need
- Three revision rounds, one each at script, storyboard and animation
Where 3D product animation works best
- Medical devices and medtech. Show how a device works inside the body or in the hand, and how to use it safely. Pairs with our medical animation work.
- IT and electronic hardware. Laptops, networking kit, sensors and data-centre equipment, explained for business buyers.
- Industrial and engineered products. Mechanisms, assemblies and systems that are too big, too small or too hidden to film.
- Aerospace and advanced materials. Products and coatings whose value only makes sense in their environment.
- Pre-launch products. Launch marketing that can start while tooling is still being finished.
What does 3D product animation cost?
3D product animation at Animation Explainers is quoted inside our studio band of $6,000 to $35,000+. 3D generally lands higher in the band than flat 2D because of modelling, look development and rendering. The main drivers:
- Model count and complexity: one product with clean CAD, or many parts built from photos
- Realism: stylised and clean, or fully photoreal materials and lighting
- Runtime and number of shots: a 30-second turntable costs less than a 2-minute mechanism story
- Variants and cutdowns: colourways, languages, aspect ratios
- Review layers: engineering, regulatory and brand sign-off

FAQ
What is 3D product animation?
3D product animation is a computer-generated video of a physical product, made from a digital 3D model that is textured, lit, animated and rendered. It can show angles, internal parts and mechanisms that normal filming can’t, and it can be made before the product exists.
What’s the difference between 3D product animation and a 3D explainer video?
3D product animation focuses on one real product: how it looks, how it’s built and how it works. A 3D explainer video uses 3D as the visual style for a whole story, which may include characters, environments and abstract ideas. Many of our films combine both: a scripted explainer with 3D product shots at the key moments.
Can you work from our CAD files?
Yes. CAD is the fastest route to an accurate model because it carries the real geometry. Send us whatever you have and we’ll advise, including if a file needs simplifying before animation.
How many revision rounds are included?
Three, one at each stage: script, storyboard and animation.
Do we need a finished product or prototype?
No. If you have CAD files, drawings or detailed reference images, we can build the model without a physical sample. That’s why 3D is often used for pre-launch marketing.
Can you show the inside of the product?
Yes. That’s one of the main reasons to choose 3D. Cross-sections, X-ray views, transparent casings and exploded views show internal parts, airflow, fluid paths or electronics that a camera can’t capture.
How long does a 3D product animation take?
A typical project takes about 6 weeks, though model complexity, runtime and review rounds all move it. A short turntable is much quicker than a two-minute mechanism explainer with engineering sign-off. We give you a dated schedule at kickoff.
How much does 3D product animation cost?
Projects at Animation Explainers are quoted inside our $6,000 to $35,000+ studio band. 3D generally sits higher than flat 2D because of modelling, look development and rendering. Model count, realism, runtime, variants and review layers set the final number. See our explainer video cost guide.
Is 3D product animation worth it compared with filming?
It’s worth it when the value of your product is hidden inside it, when the product isn’t built yet, or when you need many variants from one model. If the product is finished and the story is about people using it, filming or 2D animation may be the better spend. We’ll say so on the first call.
What formats do you deliver?
A master file for web, plus cutdowns and aspect ratios for social, ads, trade-show screens and sales decks. Tell us every channel at the start so the shots are framed for all of them.
Ready to show how your product works?
Send us the product, the audience and the one thing buyers must understand. We’ll tell you whether 3D is the right tool, which shots it needs and what it will take.
